What To Do?

Look at all the updates now!! Lol. Anyway, I have a bit of a dilemma and am wondering if anyone has any advice or words of wisdom. I recently got in contact with the Computing Science Graduate Studies office at University of Alberta; I was inquiring about whether I would meet the requirements for their PhD program after completing my MBET. It turns out that I will not, because the program is a Masters' in Business and because it is only 12 months it does not meet the U of A entrance requirements for a PhD in Computing Science.

Now this is a huge deal to me (and I am trying to arrange to go in and meet with the chair of this department to learn more), but eventually completing my PhD is my goal, and I'm not sure I am prepared to complete another Masters' program in Science before doing that. I am really excited about the MBET program and think that it's an excellent way to broaden my knowledge rather than focus it on a smaller area; reading about others' experiences in the program has gotten me excited for all the opportunities and experience it has to offer.

I guess I'm just confused about whether to continue on the path to complete the MBET or look into other Masters' programs in science. MBET in only one year and it is feasible to complete another Master's after that, however, even now Student Loans are starting to drown me and will hardly cover this year, so I wonder what they would be like after 1 Bachelor's Degree, 2 Masters' and a PhD??? I have so many things pulling me in both directions, I know I want to go to school, but the cost is a real factor right now, and I have had a couple job opportunities recently (with much better pay then I currently get) that are tempting, although doing jobs similar to what I currently do and I am finding this position fairly mundane and not challenging. So do I work through another year (trying to save some cash) and apply for a different Masters' program which would qualify me for the PhD program, or do I continue on the original path of the MBET and see what kinds of new opportunities present themselves afterwards???

Hehehe good question coz for one I am bored at work, and i also like talking, though in this case i will have to type.
Option 1: After the MBET i don't know how many more causes u will have to take in the Master of Science Prg. If the causes are going to take u a max of one year, I would suggest you take the MBET, then get like a part time job as you do the extra courses to finish up the MSc. Then after that you could do your Phd. The reason is mostly masters will take 2 years to complete in most discplines so will actually have not lost anytime.

Option 2: If the Msc courses will take more than 1 year after u have finished your MBET then u have to think about what is it that u really wanna do in future. will the business aspect of the MBET help you in attaining what you wanna do. Seems to me your eventual goal is to get a Phd so would suggest for you take the Msc then Phd - then in the future when you have paid your student loans you could take the MBET which is only one year anyway. You might even find your scholarship might be better and hopefully they can keep it for u or use it at the U.

In conclusion what I recommend is that to do your Phd you need the Msc. And its seems thats what you really want - to get your Phd. Once this happens you can still do your MBET - you are still young and time is on your side right now. For now it all depends on you, and what is attractive to you.

well if you take the MBET would some of those courses transfer over and you would also be able to use them towards a Msc? b/c if thats the case then, I vote that you do the MBET, then the Msc and the the Phd, your name would look so cool Stephanie Husby Bsc,MBET, Msc, Phd. and you are only 23 this year, there is still plenty of time to do all of these things and if you do the MBET first then you would get a good job that pays lots of money that would then help you pay off the student loans and help you pay for the Msc.
my only question is, are you going to regret not getting your MBET and all of those experiences if you choose not to go?
go with your heart, it won't lead you wrong.

ohh so this is your life issue. Well coming from a person with too many degrees lol 3 to be exact and uh still no job but thats another blog. Do what your gut tells you. You only get one chance at this life thing and you should make the most of it.. don't worry about what gets you best job most money.. worry about what makes you happy and what will you enjoy. In the end it will all work out and I bet if you did either you could get on as prof and do your phd with the university and get paid to do it. What is the most useful to you? You have lots of time and some pretty awesome choices, do what makes yah smile and excited to wake up to in the morning.
